Turkey Hunting 101: Calls, Decoys and Setup

Hunt the Morning Rush

Turkeys talk most at dawn when they leave the roost. Set up well before first light — get in position, get quiet, and let the woods wake up around you.

Calling Basics

You need two calls in your pocket: a slate for soft, seductive yelps and a box call for louder, longer-range sound. Practicing three notes — the yelp, the cluck and the purr — covers 90% of the conversations.

• Yelp: the classic "come here" sound, 2–3 seconds apart
• Cluck: a single note that says "I am here, all is well"
• Purr: soft contentment, effective on birds that have gone quiet

Decoy Strategy

A single hen decoy facing away from your position with a visible head works best early in the season. Later, a jake decoy can tempt dominant toms looking for a fight. Set decoys 25–30 yards out, in open ground you can shoot across.

Patience Wins

The turkey that gobbles once at sunrise and never again may still come. Stay put for at least 45 minutes after the last sound. The bird that moves silently is often the one that fills a tag.
